Leading by Example

Several of the world’s major growing economies are in the region, where population is estimated to soon reach 4 billion. The demands from economic growth and growing population will place stress on the environment and resources in the region, and in turn, people’s livelihoods. For example, continued unabated pollution from vehicles and industry are expected to reach three times their current level by 2020.

To counter this, UNEP promotes preventive policies among policy makers and industry through initiatives on sustainable urbanization, health and environment, education, environment and livelihood security and waste management, including e-waste.

These tangible initiatives provide governments and civil society examples they can experience and emulate. UNEP hopes that partners in region will replicate these efforts, so that the region can be on track for a sustainable future.
