Communications and Public Information

Roles
The Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific works to broaden the constituency for UNEP in the region through promoting cooperation with government, non-governmental organisations, the private sector and civil society, and raising public awareness of environmental issues. Media relations are given high priority.

The Regional Information Officer and Information Assistant work closely with the Communications and Public Information Branch in Nairobi on a programme of initiatives designed to support environmental action.

Regional Programmes

Media Relations
ROAP issues press releases and can provide briefing materials to the media on topical issues. It also has a programme of capacity building to strengthen environmental reporting in the region.

Information Provision
ROAP fosters information exchange through its web site, the maintenance and provision of a collection of information resources, and a public query response service.

Youth Programme

Special Envoys
UNEP occasionally Special Envoys to help raise awareness of environmental problems and offer practical solutions to them.

Global Programmes
ROAP works closely with UNEP's Division of Communications and Public Information on projects such as:

  • World Environment Day which is celebrated every June 5
  • Our Planet magazine
  • Publications -available through UNEP's on-line bookshop
  • The Global 500 and Sasakawa Prizes
  • BBC Earth Report produced by the International Television Trust for the Environment (TVE)
