Asia Pacific Regional Civil Society Meeting
25-26 October 2007, Seoul, The Republic of Korea

Day 3

In Session 5: The Global Environment Outlook (GEO4) presentation and discussion about the findings, Ms Tunnie Srisakulchairak, UNEP Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific presented the highlights of GEO4. She reported that GEO4 provided a comprehensive coverage of the state and trends of the environment, development and human well-being and an outlook of the future and looks at regional environmental challenges as well. With regards to Asia-Pacific, GEO4 identifies key regional issues as urban air quality, freshwater stress, vital ecosystems, agricultural land use, and waste management. The meeting expressed congratulations to UNEP on the report and had discussions on disseminating the outcomes.
Session 6: Review of the discussion paper on Enhancing Major Groups Participation at UNEP’s Governance Level was chaired by Dr Eun-Kyung Park. UNEP provided overview on its efforts to strengthen partnership with civil society and briefed the meeting on major steps towards development of the Guidelines for Improving the Global Civil Society Forum Cycle. Each sub-regional group voiced their preferences for the election scenarios and policy statement scenarios and the meeting discussed relevant issues and suggestions. Following the discussion on Enhancing Major Groups Participation at UNEP’s Governance level, the meeting elected representatives to the 9th Global Civil Society Forum (GCSF) which to be held on 19 February 2008 in Monaco as associated meeting of UNEP Governing Council / Global Ministerial Forum.
Session 7: Selection of major groups representations to the GCSF and SS.X-GC/GMEF and brainstorming on Asia-Pacific Regional Civil Society Statement
Session 8: Introduction to UNEP Medium Term Strategy and discussion was facilitated through teleconference with UNEP Headquarters by Mr Olivier Deleuze, Chief of UNEP Major Groups and Stakeholders Branch Mr John Scanlon, UNEP Special Advisor on Policy and Operational Matters briefed the meeting on UNEP Medium Term Strategy (MTS) for the period 2010-2013. He provided details on background and process of the strategy and priority areas identified.
Before closing, participants went over the draft Asia-Pacific Regional Civil Society Statement and agreed on a process to finalize the statement by mid-November. They also completed a written evaluation of the meeting to provide feedback. Ms Alexandra Karekaho, UNEP HQ Major Groups and Dr Yeong-Wan Seo, UNEP Eco-Peace Leadership Center delivered concluding remarks and Mr Mahesh Pradhan, UNEP Regional office for Asia and the Pacific thanked participants and EPLC on behalf of the Regional Director. Professor Deo Prasad, chair of the meeting closed the meeting by expressing his gratitude to participants and organizers for their important contributions and active participation.
