Asia Pacific Regional Civil Society Meeting

Day 2

The meeting commenced with opening remarks from Mr Surendra Shrestha, UNEP Regional Director and Representative for Asia and the Pacific, Ms Alexandra Karekaho, UNEP HQ Major Groups and Stakeholders Branch and Professor Deo Prasad, Chair of 2006 Asia-Pacific Regional Civil Society Meeting
In Session 1: Civil Society Engagement in the Asia-Pacific, presentations were made by Dr Yeong-Wan Seo, Secretary General of UNEP Eco-Peace Leadership Center (EPLC) and Mr Surendra Shrestha, UNEP Regional Director and Representative for Asia and the Pacific.
Session 2 Introduction to the SS.X-GC/GMEF theme: “Globalization and the Environment: Mobilizing Finance to meet the Climate Challenge and its links to poverty alleviation,” six keynote presentations highlighted the issue, as follows:
Dr Myung-Kyoon Lee, Keimyung University on financing the transition to a sustainable low carbon economy, including through new investment flows and markets;
Dr Gyung-Sik Choi, Environment Management Corporation Korea and Dr Faizal Parish, Global Environment Centre, Malaysia on accessing the finance required to adapt to change;
Dr Faizal Parish, Global Environment Centre, Malaysia on accessing the finance required to adapt to change;

Dr Masanori Kobayashi, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, Japan on creating both an enabling and sustainable policy and regulatory environment for the transition;

Dr Kwan-Seok Jeong, Eco-Frontier on achieving multiple environmental objectives and avoid unintended environmental consequences through the transition and through adaptation measures; and
Mr Golam Rabbani, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies addressed the meeting on identifying linkages to wealth generation and poverty eradication through the transition and through implementing adaptation measures.
Following the presentations, four working groups discussed the key issues of financing transition to low carbon economy, access to finance, policy and regulatory environments, multiple objectives, as well as the linkages to wealth generation and poverty. Each group reported back in the subsequent plenary session facilitated by Mr Mahesh Pradhan, Regional Environmental Affairs Officer, UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. Inputs from the working groups were consolidated into the regional civil society statement.
