Civil society engagement

Global information of UNEP's strategy for civil society engagement is available from http://www.unep.org/civil_society/

Background
The global and regional policy framework for sustainable development is now largely formulated. The pressing challenge is to translate words into action, to focus on implementation, and to channel the energy and expertise of civil society into these efforts.

UNEP has recognized the importance of civil society in environmental sustainability and is actively working to ensure its role in the formulation of policy programme implementation.

UNEP helped facilitate civil society engagement at the regional and sub-regional level in the preparatory process for the World Summit on Sustainable Development. Reports were prepared for five sub-regional preparatory meetings and a synthesis paper published.
